How this is calculated
After discount = original amount × (1 − discount ÷ 100). Sales tax = after discount × tax ÷ 100. Tip = after discount × tip ÷ 100. Total = after discount + sales tax + tip. Each person pays total ÷ number of people. The discount is always applied first, and both tax and tip are then calculated from the discounted amount.
Worked example
A $100 bill with a 10% discount, 8% tax, and 20% tip: after discount is 100 × 0.90 = $90, tax is 90 × 0.08 = $7.20, tip is 90 × 0.20 = $18.00, and the total is $115.20. Split four ways that is $28.80 each.
What is included
The discount is applied first. Sales tax and tip are then calculated from the discounted amount. Some restaurants calculate tip before tax, and local tax rules vary, so use the result as a convenient estimate and check your receipt.

- Can I calculate tip before tax?
- Not with the default calculation. Subtract the tax from the bill before entering it if you want to estimate a tip on a pre-tax subtotal, then compare the result with your local convention.
- Why does my receipt differ?
- Taxes may apply only to certain items, discounts may be handled differently, and service charges may replace or supplement a tip.
